About this workshop

Have you ever stared in amazement at a Japanese woodblock print, wondering how those subtle images full of fine details could possibly have been carved from wood?

In this workshop you will discover the secret of the Japanese woodblock cutting technique, but even more, also of our own European woodcut tradition. After a short introduction you get straight to work. The instructor shows you how to handle the cutting tools and you receive a practice plate to immediately test and train your carving skills.

After the workshop you take this plate home so you can continue your journey towards becoming a master carver.

Mokuhanga

Japanese woodblock printing, also known as mokuhanga, is the result of nearly 425 years of perfecting the woodcut technique. This printing method stands out for its strongly artisanal character: the extensive handwork required to create a successful woodblock print. A good Japanese woodblock print is the result of a perfect balance between thorough technical skills and free, creative ideas.

Mokuhanga is one of the least toxic printing techniques in existence, with a highly sustainable character and a low ecological impact — which explains its rising popularity worldwide.

With these introduction workshops we primarily target (absolute) beginners and amateurs who would love to experience the special character of Japanese woodblock printing for themselves.
