About this workshop

Are you especially moved by the subtle and magical colours and colour transitions when looking at a Japanese woodblock print? Then this workshop is an absolute must.

Here you discover the entirely unique printing method of this art form and get to work with it yourself. Using several pre-carved woodblocks you compose your own design. Together with your instructor you print your design and discover the wonderful, painterly possibilities of printing with simple water-based paints.

You go home with a mini-edition of 4 prints that you can proudly show to friends and family.

Mokuhanga

Japanese woodblock printing, also known as mokuhanga, is the result of nearly 425 years of perfecting the woodcut technique. This printing method stands out for its strongly artisanal character: the extensive handwork required to create a successful woodblock print. A good Japanese woodblock print is the result of a perfect balance between thorough technical skills and free, creative ideas.

Mokuhanga is one of the least toxic printing techniques in existence, with a highly sustainable character and a low ecological impact — which explains its rising popularity worldwide.

With these introduction workshops we primarily target (absolute) beginners and amateurs who would love to experience the special character of Japanese woodblock printing for themselves.
